{"id":510,"date":"2015-05-10T00:48:01","date_gmt":"2015-05-10T04:48:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/?p=510"},"modified":"2015-05-10T00:48:01","modified_gmt":"2015-05-10T04:48:01","slug":"visual-patterns-first-putting-together-a-new-quadratics-module","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/2015\/05\/10\/visual-patterns-first-putting-together-a-new-quadratics-module\/","title":{"rendered":"Visual Patterns First: Putting Together A New Quadratics Module"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This cycle we&#8217;re\u00a0focusing on Quadratic Equations. \u00a0The topic of quadratic equations has been a bit of a murky area in our transfer school. \u00a0We don&#8217;t necessarily have a scope and sequence, and teach a bunch of modules, and it seemed to me we weren&#8217;t giving fair treatment to Quadratic functions. \u00a0I had one project &#8220;The Function Field Guide&#8221; that covered the topic in brief details, but thought we could create a new module so kids could\u00a0understand all the cool things about these functions. \u00a0Creating this module has been going good so far, so I figured it would be good to blog about the\u00a0broad strokes behind it&#8217;s construction and roll out.<\/p>\n<h4>Visual focus from the beginning<\/h4>\n<p>I wanted students to understand the purpose for the quadratic equations centra distinction from the function that most stduents think of when they think of equation (linear functions of the y=mx+b variety) so I started by showing this pattern. \u00a0From this the students sat and thought about the pattern of growth in the table, and how they coudl represent it. \u00a0on one hand we saw that it was not going up by a regular amount, that &#8220;It was going up by odds&#8221; and on the other hand some one looking at the fact that it was a square could see that the area of square would be x*x. \u00a0We talked about this a lot over the first day. \u00a0I thought it was too much because the kids seemed bored, but I&#8217;m not sure if the connection between the two methods was understood. \u00a0THe kids seemed unsatisfied by not being able to tie their &#8220;odd&#8221; noticing to something concrete. \u00a0So we kept doing visual patterns at the beginning of every class varying between quadratic and linear, and after defining the terms the kids now have an added task with each visual pattern, (is it quadratic, or is it linear, or something else?).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_526\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/Patterns.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-526\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-526\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/Patterns-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"The visual pattern Do Now activities I used on the first six weeks of the cycle\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/Patterns-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/Patterns.jpg 725w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The visual pattern Do Now activities I used\u00a0in the first six weeks of the cycle<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Fixing potholes along the way<\/h4>\n<p>&#8216;Fixing the potholes&#8217; is a term coined\u00a0by the East Side Community School teachers talk of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/2015\/04\/29\/msri-2015-a-national-math-education-conference-focusing-on-developmental-ed\/\">MSRI event<\/a>\u00a0(around 56:00). \u00a0The idea is basically to fill in pot holes on the way to new destinations, not tear up and repave roads without making any forward progress. \u00a0If you find engaging problems to inspire kids to\u00a0understand higher mathematics, the kids will realize what areas they need to work on. \u00a0Then we tie their curiosity to the\u00a0need to repair their old\u00a0understandings, and provide the space for that &#8220;pothole-filling&#8221; as we pave the road into more interesting content. \u00a0 I much prefer this to traditional review: teaching it the same as before, but faster and with less support.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of starting with an introduction on graphing, equations, linear functions I decided to work situations into the class where we do the review along the way. So when we started off looking at these patterns and classified the idea of a quadratic pattern, I get a chance to review\u00a0linear functions for the students who may not have been signed up for my linear module and can benefit from seeing it in a new light.<\/p>\n<h4>Begin\u00a0with vertex format<\/h4>\n<p>In the past when I&#8217;ve taught quadratics I&#8217;ve taught standard form and factored form first, because kids are often familiar with the operation of going back and forth between those two. \u00a0This year I am starting with the f(x) = a(x + h)<sup>2<\/sup> + k form of function\u00a0because I think these are the kinds of functions kids will generate on their own when looking at visual patterns. \u00a0If I see patterns like the ones above, I am not going to think, &#8220;oh, it&#8217;s like that square function, but we have to add two to it first&#8221; or &#8220;oh, it&#8217;s like that square function but with an extra thing on the side. \u00a0If kids are comfortable making and using these this form, they can quickly translate it to a graph, and we can start to make sense of the graph from there.<\/p>\n<h4>Building tent posts with reflective writing<\/h4>\n<p>So my way of thinking about this unit is kind of like building this series of mathematical tent posts, like a circus tent. \u00a0We get the main ones up, then all the little side posts and supports. \u00a0A the end of the unit,\u00a0we&#8217;ll have created a place where kids can play around or build something cool. \u00a0The tent posts I&#8217;m planning will be the big thought for the week, and we&#8217;ll do it every Friday. \u00a0I&#8217;ll keep these big ideas\u00a0on chart paper some where in the room\u00a0to keep referring to through the week. \u00a0I&#8217;ll also ask kids to write about it, as well as create an example.<\/p>\n<p>This tent post is pretty good so far. \u00a0The first big thought was what distinguishes a linear relationship from a quadratic relationship. \u00a0Last week was the shifts of the parabola and the connection to the vertex\u00a0format. \u00a0Next week will probably involve\u00a0either a further exploration of the parabola graph, the general function of the parabola, or maybe both.<\/p>\n<h4>Searching for the final project<\/h4>\n<p>My plan is to end up with a final modeling project.
