{"id":212,"date":"2014-05-31T00:21:39","date_gmt":"2014-05-31T04:21:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/?p=212"},"modified":"2014-06-01T08:56:14","modified_gmt":"2014-06-01T12:56:14","slug":"exploring-the-mathematics-of-economics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/2014\/05\/31\/exploring-the-mathematics-of-economics\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring The Mathematics Of Economics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My Banking And Investment unit isn&#8217;t going to come to the epic conclusion as I once hoped, but life goes on.\u00a0 . <a title=\"\u2018Dunshire Abbey of Thrones\u2019: A Game Made To Teach Kids Economics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/2014\/05\/08\/dunshire-abbey-of-thrones-a-game-made-to-teach-kids-economics\/\">Dunshire Abbey <\/a>was my attempt to teach students all the fundamentals of economics through a classroom\u00a0multiplayer game which could form the context of the final project. \u00a0After <a title=\"Opening Up Your Thinking\" href=\"http:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/2014\/05\/23\/opening-up-your-thinking\/\">talking with my colleagues<\/a> and my students, I decided it would be too hard to finish this game.\u00a0 Instead I taught a brief lesson about the modern economic tenets (including <a href=\"http:\/\/csinvesting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/inflationpics251108.pdf\">inflation<\/a>) to replace what we would have discovered during the game.\u00a0 Hopefully I will create a second version of the game that I can try with next years class.<\/p>\n<p>The students in B&amp;I now will finish the class at the helm of their own company operating in a perfectly competitive market, each with different conditions. \u00a0Their assignment will be to use their knowledge to develop the costs associated with producing at 10 different levels and then determining\u00a0their economic profit. \u00a0The math embedded in this should be mixtures of some exciting patterns and developing functions along with some un-exciting algorithms, which I&#8217;ve not yet discovered how to avoid.<\/p>\n<p>The assignment gave students the following as their task:<\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 1px solid black;padding: 2px\">\n<p>You have been given control of a company, Your Company is in the Industry of:\u00a0 (Name your Industry)<\/p>\n<p>You ship giant units of product, at a price of ___________ per unit<\/p>\n<p>Laborers in your industry get paid at a rate of ___________ Per Day<\/p>\n<p>It takes ___________ Laborers to make ___________ Units of product<\/p>\n<p>To make 1 unit of your product you need supplies which cost ___________<\/p>\n<p>Decreasing Marginal Returns (Fee) affects you r company at a cost of ___________ * (quantity)^2<\/p>\n<p>Also You have to pay 6000 for Rent, taxes, and other expenses.<\/p>\n<p>You need to determine the costs for producing 1-10 units of your product.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Going along with my principal of never accepting two identical projects, I needed the kids to have uniquely different companies. \u00a0Since they hadn&#8217;t developed game information from the non-existent Dunshire Abbey game, I had to come up with new numbers, and I needed those numbers to &#8220;work.&#8221;\u00a0 After creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/ccc?key=0AivXaWiRLKZsdDZ4Z1NYWlpXakNKWFcwZ212eXRDMEE&amp;usp=sharing\">pretty boss spreadsheet with a functioning set of numbers<\/a>, I gave out functioning sets of numbers to students using the &#8220;Random Path&#8221; method.\u00a0 <em>What&#8217;s the &#8220;Random Path&#8221; method?<\/em> Good question!<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Random Path&#8221; method is a way to get kids to select sets of data that otherwise would be handed out on little slips of paper.\u00a0 There are a set of points on the board that kids have to randomly draw paths through.\u00a0 The points get replaced with the different varieties of pre-selected data for each kid to copy down.\u00a0 It worked pretty well, but what do you think?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/imgflip.com\/gif\/98diq\"><img title=\"Random path method\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgflip.com\/98diq.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a> <img class=\"rotate90\" src=\"http:\/\/static.ow.ly\/photos\/normal\/5KnLq.jpg\" alt=\"Owly Images\" width=\"240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This class is interdisciplinary class is &#8220;math&#8221;
