For Helping Me Turn A Lesson I Was Scared Of Into One I Am Excited About!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So late last night was like most nights lately.\u00a0 I needed to make a post and since I did not have a particularly <a title=\"Where I Tell An Embarrassing Story And Explain The Point Of This Blog\" href=\"http:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/2014\/04\/26\/where-i-tell-an-embarrassing-story-and-explain-this-blogs-purpose\/\">witty story<\/a> or an <a title=\"Why Is It OK To Call Our Education System \u201cBroken\u201d?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.coast2coast.me\/carl\/2014\/05\/04\/can-we-retire-the-phrase-our-education-system-is-broken\/\">educational diatribe<\/a> to roll in to, I really was just trying to keep the streak alive.\u00a0 Since I had just finished looking\u00a0at kids&#8217; final projects, I noticed how all of them needed help doing or even attempting the\u00a0&#8220;Generalizing Problems&#8221; worksheet. \u00a0That worksheet felt worse\u00a0than anything I did all year.<\/p>\n<p>So I wrote out a post late last night and placed the worksheet that so many students struggled with right in there. \u00a0Did I mention how bad I felt about this worksheet? Anyways, the next day I woke up a little more comfortable with the idea of having this thing that scared me out in public, so I asked for some ideas to improve it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" width=\"550\">\n<p>OK, I just finished a lesson to get HS students writing proofs about number properties. Little help <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MTBoS?src=hash\">#MTBoS<\/a>? <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/IXLU68nisP\">http:\/\/t.co\/IXLU68nisP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Carl Oliver (@carloliwitter) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/carloliwitter\/status\/464069551077224448\">May 7, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>After this a torrent of ideas came my way about how to get students to write proofs, how\u00a0&#8220;proof&#8221; should be thought about, and many\u00a0other things I could do to improve this lesson for the next time I teach it. \u00a0I also tried to quietly back out of what seemed like a long standing argument about whether rectangles or triangles are better (it&#8217;s triangles, right?).<\/p>\n<p>Either way, it made a day better that otherwise wouldn&#8217;t have been, and will hopefully make my students better mathematicians! Thanks #MTBoS!
